The only known surviving prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation is going up for sale via auction in February 2020.
Back in the ’90s Nintendo partnered up with Sony to build a hybrid console that ran Super Famicom/SNES cartridges as well as CD-ROMs. After a falling out between the two companies around royalties, Sony went on to produce the PlayStation, one of the biggest selling consoles of all time.
Widely believed to be the only unit in existence, the current owner Terry Diebold got hold of the console with a bundle of items for just $75 in an online bankruptcy auction several years ago.. His son Dan noticed the system and quickly realised what they had in their hands, and have spent the last several years touring various video game shows and conventions showing off the console.
The Nintendo PlayStation goes on sale in February via Heritage Auctions, the worlds largest collectible auctioneer. The Diebolds have already turned down an offer of $1.2 million from a collector in Norway so it remains to be seen how much the Nintendo PlayStation will fetch.
