After years of not seeing exactly eye-to-eye, YouTube is finally back on Amazon Fire TV devices. After a nearly 2 year absence, Amazon and Google (who own YouTube) have settled their differences in a big win for everyone involved. Previously users had to use an in-browser Web App to access the service, which was less than ideal.
The YouTube app will be available on a number of different devices including Fire TV Stick (2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, and Fire TV Stick Basic Edition. As well as some Fire TV enabled Smart TV’s from Toshiba, Insignia, Element and Westinghouse.
The app features a number of features users couldn’t get using the Web App such as playback for 4K HDR 60fps video and Alexa voice control. The app will be available on more Fire TV devices in the coming months.
In exchange, Amazon Prime Video now supports casting via Google Chromecast, a feature that has long been absent, as well as being available on more Android TV boxes.
